Phillip Smyth is a researcher and analyst focused on Shia jihadist and militia groups. He has worked at the University of Maryland and as an adjunct fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, where he authored his seminal 2015 study, “The Shiite Jihad in Syria and Its Regional Effects.” Smyth pioneered the use of social media in his analyses of emerging Shia militant organizations, their casualties, links to Iran, and increasing involvements in conflicts in Bahrain, Syria, and Iraq on his influential Hizballah Cavalcade blog on Jihadology.net.
